The February break week was one of solid efforts that came up a bit short for SGI student-athletes.

Varsity Wrestling, Submitted by Coach Mark Vogel

This past weekend, Mikey Evans participated in the New York State Wrestling Championships help at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY.  Mikey went 2-2 at the tournament.  He won his first match by pin before losing to the eventual champion.  In the consolation bracket, Mikey won his first match 10-1 and lost his next match in a tough battle.  The loss eliminated Mikey from the tournament, but the two wins will earn him many points towards next year.  Congratulations Mikey!

Varsity Girls’ Basketball, submitted by Coach Bob Gainey

The varsity girls basketball team completed their season over February break. The girls had one more regular season game to complete before playoffs and they did so in excellent fashion beating MEC 48-31. The girls played terrific team basketball and sent the seniors off with a victory on their senior night. Seniors Maddie Pazzuti, Carrie Dickinson, Lexi Sopko and Julia Krzemien all scored and played incredibly well on both sides of the ball to get the girls the win. Afterwards the girls found out that they would be heading to Albion for a prequarterfinal playoff game the following Tuesday. The girls played incredibly well defensively and limited Albions best player to five points. Unfortunately the girls couldn’t get their offense going and wound up losing 41-27. Julia Krzemien led all scorers with 17 points and Lexi Sopko pulled down 11 rebounds in the losing effort. Despite the loss the girls have a lot to be proud of with winning 6 more games compared to last year and defeating the division winners, Tonawanda, on the road. The program would like to thank the four incredible seniors who will be moving on: Julia Krzemien, Maddie Pazzuti, Carrie Dickinson and Lexi Sopko for all of their hard work and commitment to the team. Great season ladies!
