Girls’ Varsity Basketball, Coach Bob Gainey

The varsity girls basketball team dropped a road league contest against Holland last week by a score of 42-25. The girls played outstanding defense, but gave up some baskets in transition and the Lady Dutchmen hit some big threes to keep a comfortable lead throughout. Despite the result, the team showed great energy and effort throughout the game. Lexi Sopko set the tone with her incredible hustle, rebounding and defense. Carrie Dickinson and Ivette Lewandowski played strong in the backcourt, especially with the press. Ryan Stedman provided a nice spark off the bench with her hustle and defense. Despite the result, the girls have a chance to string along some wins with the schedule in front of them.

For the final meet of the season, the Boys Varsity Griffins hosted the Saint Francis High School Swim Team.  With it being the final meet, the Griffins also had the opportunity to honor their three seniors: Bret DeFrain, Kurt Uschold, and Nolan West.

All three seniors were able to perform swims of their choice, while still working towards a Griffins victory with a final score of 58-43.

For nearly half the team, this was their final meet of the season as they were unable to achieve a qualifying time or score for the swimming and diving postseason. Many of the athletes were extremely close to qualifying and this only bodes well for the future as we look ahead to what we have next year without these three outstanding seniors.

Congratulations to all, but especially to Bret, Kurt and Nolan for the hard work and dedication that they have put into this team.

Meet Highlights:

On Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28, the Springville Boys Swimming and Diving Team Competed at Sweet Home High School for ECIC-A.

ECIC A is where all the “small schools” of Erie County come together to compete with the swimmers and divers who have been able to achieve a qualifying time or score.

Qualifying for Springville were seniors Nolan West and Kurt Uschold,  junior Dominic Hartenstein, sophomores Jon Boberg and Jackson Richert, freshmen Elliot Emley, Wyatt Fuller, and Nate Myers,  8th graders Zach Hughey, Blaze Schelble and Eric Schweickert, and 7th grader Austin Yetter.

Friday night saw the divers compete.  Unfortunately for the Griffins, Wyatt Fuller was unable to compete due to illness.  Jackson Richert had also qualified though and rose to the challenge of an 11-dive meet.  Staying consistent through the two-and-a-half-hour long competition saw Jackson rise from his initial placement of 5th entering the competition to finish in 3rd place!

Starting off the swimming portion of the meet was the 200 Medley Relay.  Seeded in 4th place, the Springville Medley A Relay comprised of Dominic, Jon, Kurt, and Nolan, swam a season best time by dropping multiple seconds and place 2nd overall in the race.

In the 200 Yard Freestyle, Kurt, dropped four seconds from his season best time to be within two seconds of a sectional qualifying score, and place 7th.

In the 200 IM, Zach, Blaze and Austin all swam personal best times and achieved higher place finishes than seeded.

In the 50 yard Freestyle, Dominic was initially placed 15th and finished in 10th place overall.  Elliot, Jackson, and Nate all swam well in the event as well.

In the 100 Butterfly, both Austin and Jon achieved lifetime bests.  Jon was also able to move from 9th place to 6th!

In the 100 Freestyle, Elliot swam a best time and qualified for the Class Meet next weekend.

The 500 Freestyle saw 3 personal best times from Eric, Kurt, and Nolan.  Nolan was the overall winner of the event while Kurt took 6th place overall and qualified for Sectionals.

The 200 Yard Freestyle Relay came next.  The lone Springville Relay team comprised of Jackson, Elliot, Kurt, and Jon dropped time from the season best and took 7th place.

The 100 Yard Backstroke had four Springville swimmers in it.  Zach Hughey, Eric, Dominic, and Nolan all competed.  Nolan lowered his own school record and took 2nd place overall.  Zach was able to swim a near lifetime best yet and took 8th place overall. Dominic swam a personal best, and came in 9th place.

In the 100 Yard Breaststroke, Blaze, Nate, and Jon all competed. Jon placed 8th out of all swimmers.  Both Nate and Blaze swam great races as well.

In the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, the relay comprised of Nolan, Zach, Dom, and Elliot were able finish 7th place overall while dropping their season best time by nearly 12 seconds.
